Research Project: Route Choice behavior

The purpose of this project is to evaluate determinants that govern en-route route choice behavior of drivers (e.g. various sources of traffic queue information), and to better understand how laboratory results can be mapped to field results. In order to assess the behavioral determinants, information presentation (which information is presented when, and from which source, e.g. navigation device with traffic information or dynamic signs along highways with information from the road authorities) and at driver characteristics (familiarity with the road, driving experience etc) will be assessed. There will be controlled laboratory experiments, e.g. in a driving simulator, a video experiment and a field test, in which various parameters of driving behavior will be logged. The project will be supervised by Dr. Marieke Martens (TNO/UTwente), Prof. Dr. Adelbert Bronkhorst (TNO/VU) and Prof. Dr. Jan Theeuwes (VU).
